SUCCESSFUL HABITAT RESTORATION IN DEVELOPED LANDSCAPES: Overcoming Constraints and Maximizing Opportunities

MAY 13, 2010 – A ONE DAY WORKSHOP

Intended for all those engaged in salmon habitat restoration: project sponsors; landowners; technical reviewers; lead entity coordinators; watershed leads; local, state, federal and tribal government staff; citizen advisory group members; elected officials; and all others interested. Everyone welcome.

Habitat restoration is a critical component of salmon recovery efforts in Puget Sound. Preferred projects are those that follow a process-based approach and seek to restore natural function. These are the projects that are self-sustaining over time and offer the highest benefits to salmon. However, most rivers and watersheds in the Puget Sound basin are developed and greatly changed from a natural state. Constraints posed by private development and public infrastructure make it difficult for restoration projects to follow the principles of a process-based approach and almost always lead to design concessions and results that are less than optimal.

How to successfully restore habitat in developed landscapes is a subject that deserves in-depth consideration and discussion. The Skagit Watershed Council, in partnership with the Puget Sound Partnership and the watersheds in Puget Sound, will hold a workshop to discuss these matters and invites your attendance and participation.
